Casio G-Shock GX-56KG and GXW-56KG “Army Green” Review

GX-56KG-3D-01Casio continues with building high quality models from King serie. This time, I’m going to review GX-56KG-3 in khaki or army green color.

Actually, there are two similar models that distinquish only by presence of radio controled time – GX-56KG-3D without ware receptor and GXW-56KG-3JF with (Multiband) Waveceptor module. All other features are completelly the same. This is also the case with other watches from GX-56xx King series.

In short, the model came to market in limited numbers together with several other “army green” models. It comes in a matte green finish with black buttons, orange accents and a negative LCD display. It is said that the color combination was inspired by a MA-1 flight jacket.

Design

The design of these models is very classic and they are currently the biggest G-Shocks on the markeet. One of the main reason for the size is mud resistance structure. This assumes that the buttons are hidden under the bezel. The buttons are pretty big and it’s easy to operate them even in the gloves.

The “G” in the model name and number stands for Graviti. This means that it’s shock resistant. The “X” stands for Extra, which means extra shock resistant. This is achieved using a-get pad in the display, for even better withsand impacts.

Movement

These watches are tough solar powered, that means they can use any light source for their operation. But the pure sunlight is the best, of course.

The GX-56KG-3D is equipped with 3221 module and the GXW-56KG-3JF with a 3220 module. The watch details says that the quartz crystal has a frequency of 32768 Hz.

The 3220 and 3221 modules have the usual functions as other basic tough solar models. By pushing the mode button, you’ll scroll through the different functions.

Features

The watch can display time in 48 cities and 31 time zones, it has an alarm function with 4 normal alarms (one snooze and a hourly chime alarm, a 24 hour stopwatch function and also a 24 hour count down timer. Time zones has support for DST (daylight saving time) and you can configure them manually.

The GXW-56KG-3JF is equipped with multiband 6 waveceptor function so it can receive the atomic time signals from 6 different transmitters in the world. The transmitters are located in:

- Fukushima and Fukuoka/Saga (JJY40 and JJY60) with a radius of 500km

- Fort Collins (WWVB60) with a 1000km radius

- Mainflingen (DCF77) and Anthorn (MSF60) with a radius of both 500km

- Sangqui (China, PBC 68.5kHz).

The auto-receive feature is turned on by default and the watch will try to receive the atomic time signal from the transmitters up to 6 times every night. You can also perform a manual synchronization by press and holding the lower right button if the watch has failed to receive the signal.
